Research

Andy Knight is a Professor and Head of Electrical and Software Engineering at the University of Calgary. His research program focuses on the challenges of integrating renewable energy sources into electrical systems, energy efficiency, and electrical energy conversion.

Energy Conversion

Research in energy conversion includes:

Microgrids & DER

Microgrid research is anchored by a 10kW nanogrid, comprised of solar PV and internal combustion engine sources, vanadium redox flow battery and active loads. This system has been design to be able to operate as an AC, DC or hybrid AC-DC system. DER research includes modeling and performance measurements of battery technologies from a grid perspective, as well as design of energy conversion components for DER systems.

Grid Integration of Renewable Energy

Grid integration research considers the challenges of managing intermitted renewable power sources with a conventional grid system. Research has included studies of Dynamic Line Rating, equitable access in rural distribution systems, and operation stratgeis and tariff treatment for grid-scale energy storage.
